if the page is being rendered in quirks mode (no doc tag) then the IE version does not apply (in quirks mode they all render the page to emulate IE6)

SO if IE7 and IE8 are showing the box out of view at the top of the page but IE6 is correctly positioned then you’ll want to change the string to this:

if ( !(jQuery.browser.msie)) { // take away IE

Add the bgiframe plugin for jQuery to the mix and your site will completely freeze in IE7 if it’s detected as IE6 due to an infinite loop in the detection of offset width.
